FREE Rangatahi Health Clinic helps youth to share and stay well
Te Kupenga Hauora - Ahuriri’s Kath Allen knows what it takes to get rangatahi to open up about their health; as well as open up in general. She previously worked as a School-Based Nurse and post-crisis counsellor in Central Hawke’s Bay. “You have to build a relationship and what I like about Te Kupenga Hauora - Ahuriri is that they understand the kaupapa. We don’t put a time restriction in place. It’s about taking things at the pace they need,” she explains.
Kath is referring to the appointments at the newly established Rangatahi Health Clinic held Monday afternoons with spots available from 3:30pm – 5:00pm. Everything is FREE and as a Registered Nurse, she is able to tautoko young people so that they stay safe and healthy at this stage of their life. The majority of the health education and assistance rangatahi see her for are sexual and mental health. Her confidential services include contraception, STI checks, pregnancy tests, support for termination and referrals to other services that can help, such as stop smoking or emotional issues. “Sometimes our rangatahi present with one issue and over time they start to talk about other areas of concern for them. It’s important they have the opportunities to share and open up.”
The service is available for those aged 12- 24 years. You can book an appointment at the Rangatahi Health Clinic by ringing or texting Kath on 021 0844 0303. Call Te Kupenga Hauora - Ahuriri on 06 835 1840 for more information.
